DEBATE

The Diabetes Association of Trinidad and Tobago (DATT) newest education and awareness initiative is our debate, Debating Diabetes: “Igniting the Conversation” for secondary school students in forms 3 and 4 throughout the country. With this debate, we aim to bring together talented debaters nationwide to engage in thought-provoking discussions and hone their public speaking and critical thinking skills while being educated about diabetes-related topics. Following last year’s successful execution of this project with approximately 20 entries from schools throughout the country, this year, we aim to increase the reach of the debate.

DATT’s mission is to promote diabetes and general health education in secondary schools to foster more health-conscious individuals with the aim of preventing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) as they grow older.

This debate will consist of three (3) rounds of competition:

  1. 1. Preliminary round: Each participating school needs to acquire a team of three (3) students for this round. A topic will be assigned and your team will be required to make two (2) submissions:
  2. -Video submission: 5 minutes video discussing your topic (1 minute opening statement, 3 minutes for your argument,  and 1 minute closing statement)
  3. -Written submission: 1 page consisting of the opening statement, argument and closing statement.
  4. 2. Semifinal round: round: Each entry will be reviewed and ranked. The top eight (8) schools will be selected and contacted. Each school will be given a topic to debate for or against. Two (2) schools will be selected.
  5. 3. Final round: The top two (2) will be given topics and they will compete on the big stage at the Chaguanas Borough Corporation on Friday 29th November 2024.
